Tips to help with a first-time camping experience

Camping and going to the bathroom

Make sure that you find a toilet that is close to camp. You don't want to have to go too far to use the bathroom. Almost everybody knows that sometimes when you have to go, you have to go. You need to make sure that you bring your own supply of toilet paper. Don't assume that the camp site is going to provide toilet paper for you. You have to follow the everyman for himself rule.

Let me just say that the inside of the bathroom at our camp site was like that of a port a potty. It even smelt the same. How gross is that? The only difference was that the toilet looked like a tall aluminum trash can with a lid. The bathroom didn't even have a sink to wash your hands in either; therefore there was no soap and no paper towels. Whose bright idea was that I wonder? It should have had a sink so that you can wash your hands, even if it didn't have the soap. Who doesn't want to wash their hands while in the wilderness?

One first rule of thumb is to keep the bathroom door shut when it's not in use, that way nothing gets in. Or at least you'd like to hope so. Another thing to keep in mind is, if you decide to use the camp bathroom be careful while using the toilet and make sure you shut the lid when you are finished. Doing this helps to prevent unwanted things from getting in to the toilet. Those suggestions are universal I'm told.

When it was time for me to relieve myself in a simple way I decided to go outside. Yes that's right I went outside. There was no way I was going in that bathroom and that was that. The smell coming from that bathroom reminded me of raw sewage. Besides I don't do port a potty's and if the bears can do it in the forest so can I. As for anything more complicated I was able to put it off until I found a convenience store with a real bathroom and a sink with running water and napkins.
