Today's youth have expertly grasped the concept of instant gratification. From basic necessities to frivolous flights of fancy, all are seemingly within fingertip reach. The only challenge facing young individuals is determining which choice brings the most pleasure. How did the next generation become such an epicurean group?
Coddled from infancy and not yet weaned from the comforting bosom of an overprotective assemblage of parents and educators, few have been given the option to become autonomous. Unable to care for themselves, the young are not ready to face the challenges of yesterday, let alone tomorrow.
In the days when sandlot baseball games only ended when the dark curtain of night swallowed the remaining rays of dusk, and an entire neighborhood would participate in a game of hide-and-seek, children were faced with age-appropriate challenges. They were silently groomed for the world ahead.
Unfortunately, many of today's youth are not prepared for tomorrow. Fearful of the society outside the deadbolt, authority figures have extended the infancy stage of development well into the teen years. So apprehensive are those who reach adulthood, that many are unable to grasp the basic responsibilities necessary to conquer everyday challenges.
However, society has not placed great emphasis on training today's youth to prepare for tomorrow's trials. Advancing medicines and technology connote longer, and much more comfortable, life spans. The promise of tomorrow means also that the challenges of tomorrow may be shelved.
