Memoirs: Remembering my childhood

REMEMBERING MY CHILDHOOD...A FEW MOMENTS IN TIME TO SHARE...

I Remember Saturday mornings getting ready to take the trip to Canadian Tire, my younger sister and I with my Father. Those of you who are from south of the boarder may not know of this wonderland of tools that was available in Canada back then and don't remember the long forgotten rows of tires and volumes of catalogs to view that were permanently screwed into posts free-standing in the middle of the store floor, won't appreciate this part of the memory. The store smelled like rubber.

All the tires they carried at the time were displayed around the store on the walls for everyone to see. It wasn't what it is like today, with rows of wares displayed neatly for you to view. You had to flip through the catalog in black and white no less and see what there was to see. My sister and I went with our Dad every Saturday as our "big" outing, and had ice-cream on the way home. I must confess, it was the ice-cream that was the big draw for me...no surprise there.

I also recall my father having his "Saturday, mowing of the lawn ritual outfit". The bright yellow pants, white leather belt, white leather shoes and checkered shirt. Yes, it was bright yellow pants. He wore that outfit EVERY time he cut our lawn. The neighbor, always wore black socks, navy blue pants, powder blue shirt and sandals. I think it was some sort of a guy thing I've never been able to tap into, because my husband has a "chore outfit" of sorts too. Hm, maybe I'm missing something. I just wear whatever I'm wearing that day to clean the house. I don't have a particular "cleaning of the house ceremonial outfit". Interesting.

However, I digress....

I Remember going with my mother to the hairdresser to get a piece attached for her then "bee-hive" now would be called an extension. The process as I recall took about 4 hours. Of course if asked back then I would have said six days....it seemed like forever! And of course there were the treats afterwords and I was certainly all about the treats!

Life seemed simple back then. We played outside until the streetlights came on and all of our moms would call us home one by one we'd all head home. Summertime we'd spend all day outside just building forts or trying to make the longest bike jump, we would have so much fun. Nobody got into too much trouble unless it was from their mom, or someone else's mom.

My Dad would make us mind our P's and Q's and his hand was big
