Buying New Cars

Should you buy new or used cars?

New or Used ?
Buying a vehicle is the second biggest investment most people make in their lifetime; a home being the first. So how do you make an informed decision on what to buy?
First the question of buying new or used must be answered. Finances, in most cases will answer that question. But even if you have the where-with-all to buy new, is it worth it? Consider these questions; how many miles will I drive in a year; how long do I plan on keeping this mode of transportation; is it going to hurt me knowing that a large depreciation will come into play as soon as I drive the new vehicle off the lot? Forget how pretty it looks, the new car smell and the prestige it will bring.

At today's prices many of us are opting for a good used car, truck or SUV. But horror stories from other used car buyers haunt our memories. Depending on your circumstances look at those no older than three model years, and with mileage in the 50,000 to 60,000 range. Remember the less mileage the higher the price, but sometimes it's worth the extra money especially if you plan on keeping it for an extended period of time. Are you buying from a reputable dealer, or are you purchasing from an individual? If a dealer do you know their reputation, if not find out, ask questions from those that have bought there. I have found that the best cars in the used market come from rental agencies. Some dealers buy these up wholesale and are willing to tell you where they came from. As a general rule these vehicles have had good care, oil changes at regular intervals, good tires and kept clean.
Wherever you buy a vehicle ask for a CARFAX report. Many dealers furnish them on all used cars but if buying from an individual go on line and order one yourself. Paint and a little body work can mask a lot of previous problems. The used market has been deluged with vehicles from various hurricanes. Most have been reconditioned but what has flood waters done to the mechanics of the power train? When looking at a prospective purchase check the door hinges. Just look back behind where they are connected to the frame. This is a spot where many detailers miss. If you spot a few grains of sand, walk away. This is an indication of how high the water was.
Know what you are looking for, check the dealer, get a report on the past history and you will be able to enjoy your used vehicle for years to come.
End
