First and foremost and this is an obvious tip but most often forgotten; have everyone use the restroom before you load up in the car/van. Then to help move the trip along assuming you have children aboard get mp3 players or a portable DVD player and most of the time children have a hard time paying attention to a movie or television show so bring along some home movies, of course you'll have to load 'em all on dvds but with today's technology that shouldn't be a problem, the kids will watch themselves for hours and it creates great memories. I took that straight out of a Family Fun magazine. You can also get cheap disposable cameras and make a list of things to take pictures of although this seems expensive especially knowing you'll wind up with lots of pictures of random things but it'll pass the time. You could also have a snack or small toy to give out each 30 min or certain distance to give the kids something to look forward to. Sing, dance at rest stops, just have fun, be safe, and travel..do all the cheesy things like hold your breath through tunnels, lift your feet when crossing state lines, hit the dashboard twice when you go under a yellow light.
