How well do you know your child?

The surprise of the new generation

It amazes me as I watch my daughter as she goes through her first few weeks of pregnancy. I remember with all 3 of my pregnancies, I felt so "complete" as if I had a responsibility to my "new family to be". I woke each morning with a sense of purpose, a reason that validated my marriage, and even my existence.

My daughter, being so new to this, understandably turns to old mom. So far, she hasn't gone through any of those "highs" with pregnancy, just morning sickness, afternoon sickness and the ever popular evening sickness.

I want to cry as I watch my little girl turn away from smells, tastes, and even textures of all the foods she loved until 2 weeks ago. This child spent the first 20 years of her life exclaiming she would never have children, didn't want to get married if it meant she would be expected to give "him" kids. bleaaach

Now she has become the earth mother extraordinaire. Her thoughts, prayers, dreams etc are all revolving around my newest grandchild. If I had placed a bet a year ago whether my daughter would not only allow herself to get pregnant, but relish the pregnancy and the hope that goes with it, I would have lost all of my bet.

I guess mothers can always assume they know their children, inside out, upside down, and it turns out we're just spectators, sitting in the bleachers dodging splinters.
