Choosing a political party

It seems like all my life I have been given choices: the Beatles or the Stones? Paper or plastic? Cash or charge? Republican or Democrat? Capitalism or Marxism? Liberal or conservative? Do you mind if I search your vehicle? Let's examine some of these choices more closely. One thing they all have in common is that each one of them is presented as if there are no other alternatives. Another thing they all have in common is that they are the choices given to you by others.

One thing I have learned in my life about choices that are given me: If someone offers me a choice of either A or B, it's a pretty safe bet that neither one of those choices will benefit me more than the other, and that both of them will benefit the person that offers them to me much more than either choice will benefit me.
This is important to keep in mind now that we are in the beginning stages of a presidential election campaign. On the one side we have the Democrats, and on the other side we have the Republicans. This is the choice we have been given.
What is the difference between a Democrat and a Republican? From what I can tell, a Democrat is someone who believes people are helpless to govern themselves and need help paying for the necessities of life. To that end, they take people's money away from them via taxes so they can use it to help people pay for the necessities of life. They believe that government is a force for good in the world, and as such should grow in in influence and power in people's lives They are known as "tax and spend" Democrats.
Republicans, on the other hand believe that people can take care of themselves just fine if only the government would stay out of their lives. To that end, they lower taxes. At the same time, they also believe that government is a force for good in the world, and as such should grow in power and influence in people's lives. But since they just cut taxes, they have to borrow money to cover their increased spending. They are known as "borrow and spend" Republicans.
There are several candidates running for president, but only a few are the "front-runners." You would think that front runners would be determined by the people who vote, but it appears that they are determined instead by the news media. Can anyone tell me who besides Hillary Clint or Barack Obama is running for president as a Democrat? Can anyone tell me who besides John McCain, Rudy Giuliani or Mitt Romney is running for president as a Republican? If you can't
