You're probably not paying much attention to your kids if you're on the internet right now! (maybe they're in bed!). Children born in this time are luckier than they could ever imagine! Where children were once used as farm laborers...they are now put on pedestals and given every want. But, what our children need more than the latest video game and barbie doll...is to know that their parents love and respect them.
In a society filled full of followers...we want to ensure that our children are following our lead. If we allow the media (tv, radio, and magazines) to watch our children and mold the adults that they will become...what have we given them? I'm not saying that we should cancel the cable and cancel the magazine subscription to Teen magazine...but, what I am saying, is ask your child Why they like that video game and show me how you beat that level....Why did Hilary Duff color her hair black?....If we become interested in the things that our children are interested in...then, without giving up the materialist things that we like...we are giving them unconventional attention. Playing board games every Monday is a great thought...but, if you're like my family...You have a closet full of games...and all the kids are in different rooms watching different tv programs! (and the boxes have never been opened!).
It's actually fun to learn how to beat the new Kingdom Hearts game, to help build the train track that Thomas is going to ride on, and to close a night popping popcorn and watching America's Funniest Home Videos.
You don't need to do a lot to show your kiddos attention...just be involved in the things that they are...and you'll make their day!
