The military base at Guantanamo Bay should be shut down. It will never be in the interest of the United States to appear secretive and vengeful, but this is the exact image created by the military prison. People around the world see it as a way for the United States to detain, coerce, and perhaps even torture a number of citizens of the world. The United States government refuses to let international organizations such as the red cross visit and has repeatedly denied the basic human rights of the prisoners. There is no way for the international community to understand our actions. At best they will see what we are doing as deceptive, at worst they will see it as a call to enact terrorist acts against the united states. Neither option makes me feel more "secure", as we have been told the prison is designed to do for the American people. Until the detainment system is totally transparent and supported by an international body, it can only hurt the image of the United States as a member of the world community. This is why the base should be closed.
