The prison at Guantanamo Bay must not be closed. The political debate "for" closing it is largely for two reasons. One to make our President and his administration look worse (if that is at all possible), but more importantly to employ 1500 lawyers by the tax payers for the people being held there. The classic political debate here is about turning enemy combatants into criminals with the due process granted in our constitution.
No where in our constitution does it suggest that enemies of the state who are not citizens have U.S. Constitutional rights. If the prison is closed the people held there will be brought to prisons in the United States where they are afforded more rights then if held outside the country. That is the law of our land. Lawyers and legal groups are lobbying a left minded Congress to do just that so hundreds and perhaps a few thousand of them can get government funded jobs. After all who is going to pay for their lawyers?
We have already seen the far left and medias attempts to vilify Guantanamo Bay. The reports of a Koran being flushed down a toilet were proven false, but there was no apology from the press. This is an agenda item of the far left to hurt the administration, give lawyers unnecessary jobs and it can hurt our country.
