I guess the main thing i realized when traveling Australia was the size of the country, it's only when you've sat on the bus for eight hours just traveling to the next city you realize quite how big the island is. I remember my tour guide telling me you can fit the U.K into Queensland six times, i was amazed to say the least.
You can go to all the tourist sights from the Harbor Bridge and the Opera House all the way up to the Great Barrier Reef, which is great but still you would have only taken in a small amount of Australia, you need to look further, spend some time in a little Aussie town which is pretty much seems like it's in the middle of nowhere, go to beaches you haven't heard of, even spend some time in the outback. There are so many different things to see from rain-forests to desserts to the most amazing beaches you're ever likely to see.
A good thing to know before you go is some of the Australian lingo, we all know g'day and dunnie but here's one i wish I'd known before, when they say thong they don't mean the underwear they mean flip flops, it's good to know these things it saves a lot of confusion!
Other than that my only other and most important piece of advice would be to have the most amazing time, throw your self right in there and try everything! whether its the unusual meats or something you just never saw yourself doing before, because even if you don't enjoy it you can at least say you tried.
