Mirror Mirror
Blaming TV or video games is the very root of the ongoing blame diversion that our society has fallen prey to. Instead of looking to ourselves for answers to the danger signs of a society in decline we as a nation seek to lay the blame elsewhere. Reforming Television is not the answer, it is likely a mirror of who we are, and if society seeks to change its reflected image, it must take a long hard look in the mirror and determine where the true flaws and blemishes are located, and perhaps a true clear vision of what we can be will be revealed. We are not the fairest of them all, but we have the potential to be if we stop blaming others for our own failings.
We cannot wrap up violence and sexual promiscuity and the changing shift in the complexion of American families in a neat little package labeled Blame TV.' We need to realize that the reflection of ourselves we see in the fun house mirror of television is distorted but that too is our responsibility and the blame again can be assigned to ourselves. Television producer's work very hard to deliver to the viewing public exactly what is most likely to appeal to us. So if we don't like the view they show us, instead of pointing the finger of blame at television we should look with an eye to honesty at our own reflection. We must acknowledge our own flaws and failings as individuals before we are able to change the flaws in society.
Society and television both serve as a mirror to our souls, and our souls somewhere became pocked with the scars of passivity and a very dangerous progression away from action and taking personal responsibility. We are very free in blaming everything and everyone for our own behavior, and we are very adept at shifting responsibility. The trend is proved in the blame TV for our children's behavior, blame the school systems for our children's poor education, blame government officials for crime, it goes on and on this blaming game. Until we stop blaming and start taking responsibility and working to change there will always be some fault to find outside of us. We wander through a carnival of distorted images that only reflect other people's faults never seeing the true image.
Today not tomorrow we should wake up and look at the world from the perspective of what we can do, not what others should be doing. Change one thing, a step at a time. If your waiter is rude don't say the service industry has become rude instead speak to the management and let them know what you intend to personally do. Whether your action is to stop supporting the bad behavior by bringing your business elsewhere or asking them what they intend to do, if you hear them blame someone else, let them know that you don't accept that and expect personal responsibility in the places you spend your dollars.
Take personal responsibility for your actions and demand it of others. The world is too money driven to not respond to a shift in spending, whether it is Television, a manufacturer of inferior products or your local politicians they want your business and will change to keep it. Don't blame others change yourself.
