Yes, but not because of all the liberal mewling. The worst thing about keeping those creepy terrorists cooped up is the expense to US taxpayers. Those guys never lived in cleaner quarters, never ate so well nor ever had such sophisticated medical care. Estimates are that each prisoner costs $25,000 a year for housing, food and security.

That money can much better be used anywhere else to help Americans, both military and civilian. The most obvious and quickest solution would be to return the prisoners to their countries of origin, preferably letting them take their first homeward step from an aircraft at 20,000 feet. Unfortunately, that is against US law and our tradition of often misplaced leniency. Not many other nations in the world treat POWs as fairly.

The solution is to put each of the prisoners on trial by the military, and then carry out whatever sentence is handed down, from freedom to execution. Since they are confined on US territory, the prisoners should have all the international rights for POWs. This will give the ACLU and other leftist lawyers ample opportunity to defend them.

The five-year delays and uncertainty should be ended immediately. A trial procedure must be set up as a permanent, ongoing system, and apply it to every suspected combatant terrorist immediately after capture.
