Guantanamo Bay Naval Base is the front line of battle for regional security and protection. It protects America from a massive influx of drug trafficking, terrorism, and offers protection to many sea going vessels in the area.
The base protects the ability of US Navy and Coast Guard ships to operate in the Caribbean, and offers a strategic operating area with supplies and support for all their operational commitments.
The Naval Base Guantanamo Bay has become the host to the Detainee Mission of the War on Terrorism following the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks.
It was not built to function as a prison and from all accounts is not an ideal location to hold prisoners. However unless a prison is actually built closing this facility down would mean the transport and holding of highly unsavory types within the US and that I'm sure is a case of inviting the devil into your own house.
