On going education is needed regarding precautions related to all allergies.
But the peanut allergy, its risks and precautions is something that needs to be reviewed time and again. As there are always many young parents and children coming into the school system each year, who may not have had the opportunity for this education.
It is hard to believe that the innocent peanut butter sandwich that tastes so good to one person could actually be life threatening to another. But this is true.
There was a time that those who had severe reactions to peanuts were rushed to emergency rooms ,hopefully on time. There are still people who were not aware of the management of a allergic reaction to peanuts and other products and fail to act swiftly enough to save a life.
We have come so far regarding risks related to food. On most packaging you now see the list of ingredients and the statements related to the processing equipment and it's exposure to peanuts. However, the risks are still great to a anyone with a peanut allergy. This sensitivity can be triggered by the slightest inhalation or contact with peanuts.
It is a good idea to educate children and adults regarding the potential severity of reactions for those allergic to peanuts. To bar students bringing peanut butter products into the school would be wise. As well, it is necessary to have vending machines screened for the inclusion of peanut butter products.
In some schools there are areas with special tables for those children who are allergic to peanuts. Hopefully this decreases the potential for exposure. School nurses and the school faculty need to be sure that children who are known to be allergic to peanuts are identified.
There should always be an Epi-Pen available. And a professional nurse to be prepared for administration, if a child has a reaction to peanut butter exposure. And presents with signs of an anaphalactic reaction. Being educated in the use of the Epi-Pen and giving emergency assistance; notifying the rescue squad and a child's family, is an event that can be managed well.
School districts should educate their students and their families about the bar of peanut products in school. At the beginning of every school year. This should be supported by the parent teachers associations. Being respectful and caring for each other, is a lesson that begins at home. And should be carried into our school systems.
