A few years ago, my son got invited to a 6th birthday party at a bowling alley. I rolled my eyes as I dropped him off and left to get some coffee. A bowling party? Really!
When I came back to get him, the birthday mom told me that he did very well, and didn't hit the bumpers once. Then the staff approached me, and invited him to join the Saturday morning youth bowling league. He was so excited, I just couldn't say no.
Three years later, I am still watching him every Saturday morning, drinking my coffee down at the local alley. Honestly, this is not something I ever envisioned myself doing. When your kids are small, you imagine them playing all kinds of sports like hockey, soccer, baseball - rarely bowling. But he still enjoys it, and the kids learn all of those great traits that all sports teach. They goof around while waiting for their turn, they colour, they sing, and they cheer every time someone gets a strike or a spare.
We've gone bowling together quite a few times in the last couple years too, which is always entertaining, especially when we invite other friends and family along with small kids. They get so excited pushing that ball down the alley, hoping that it may hit something! Even watching it roll down the gutter is amusing as the ball lumbers along.
Since that first bowling party that he was invited to, every February we have invited all of his friends down to the alleyway as well. The kids always have a blast, the parents that stay enjoy themselves, and the coffee is always hot. We will be there again next weekend, watching the kids cheer each other on.
