Ten Reasons not to believe in God.
1) September 11, 2001. Any all powerful deity that lets this slip is not worth my time.
2) Radical Islamic Terrorists. These people are killing in the name of God. Religion can drive desperate people to dangerous extremes and nothing highlights the mortal peril that belief in God presents to society better then Radical Islamic Terrorism.
3) Child Rapists/Killers. Again, how could I believe in the goodness of a god that lets these monsters prey on children? Meditate on the crimes of John Couey and answer the question of what is better? No God, or an all knowing all powerful deity that watched Couey rape young Jessica Lunsford then bury her alive. I'll take no deity over one that doesn't care for the innocent.
4) Church sex abuse scandals. These are the spokesmen of God. With one hand they beg for your money, with the other they fondle young boys.
5) The questionable credibility of those selling religion. A lot of the people that preach the word are of sketchy moral character. Just watch some of the crazier televangelist for evidence of this or see reason 4.
6) The lack of evidence or proof. Video killed the radio star, and science is killing the magical side of religion. The burden of proof rests with the people making the fantastic claims, not those that doubt virgin births, the dead rising or men walking on water.
7) The emphasis of faith over reason. Faith is gullibility dressed up. It is not a virtue but an avenue for exploitation for salesmen and scammers the world over. I hear there is a wealthy exiled prince in Africa that wants me to cash a check for him too. Too good to be true, usually is.
8) Who created the creator? The argument that we are too complex to have not been intelligently designed never addresses the logical next step of that argument. A master designer complex enough to create us, must be more complex still and require an even more complex creator setting up a chain of intelligent designers creating each other stretching back into infinity. Complexity evolving from simplicity is much easier to grasp, once you actually read a science book and get over the whole "I'm not descended from a monkey" thing. No you are not. That very statement indicates that a person is ignorant of the facts and is just repeating the talking points of his ignorant neighbors or clergy.
9) The plurality of conflicting views on God. There are many different takes on God and religion from all over the world. Most of them really old and out of date. While they present interesting insights into human psychology, they can't all be the right answer.
10) Antiquity does not equal wisdom. Most religions are the product of primitive cultures that did not have books, television, the Internet, public schools or any of the other means of gaining knowledge that we take for granted today. While modern religions have been refined and edited over the centuries, they still mainly find their roots in the collected fables and myths of nomadic animal herding societies from the dawn of recorded history. While interesting from an anthropological perspective, these musing from a more ignorant time do not provide a solid guide to modern living.
