Poetry: Nature

Desert Wonders

I lay here as the sun rises
Over the majestic peaks of the mountains.
The only sounds are those of
The early morning birds
And the soft hum of the air conditioner
Fighting off the desert heat.
I look out the window
At the peaceful beauty around me.
There is something so calming and restful
And the desert.
The breathtaking landscape invites you
To enjoy the day, going slow,

Being lazy.
Nothing is rushed or hurried,
Just peace and quiet.
A bird singing here or there,
The soft rustle of a desert wind,
An occasional gust.
No heavy traffic,
No noises of a crowded city,
No smog and grime.
Only the beauty of nature,
The way God intended it to be.
When I thought of the desert
I always thought of dirt and heat.
But there is so much more.
From the moment my eyes
Saw the mountains I fell in love.
Rocky formations reaching into the heavens,
The clear blue sky the perfect background.
The barren land spotted with
Different shades of green.
The desert animals I always
Considered "exotic".
The I saw the thunderstorms
At sunset.
All I could do was stand outside
And watch in glorious fascination
As the sky blended to a
Breath taking purple pink
That cannot be described in words.
The flashes of lightening high on the mountains.
The sky turning darker purple
As the sun faded into the west.
The sheets of rain that looked like
A black curtain over the mountains,
Announcing the end of the play.
I stood breathless, watching the storm,
Never knowing until that moment
That the sheer beauty of a storm
Could be so serene.
I would have frozen time
To gaze upon the sky forever
If I could.
The sun set too quickly
And the rain moved closer,
Forcing me to take shelter inside.
Everyday I wake up
And the beauty overwhelms me.
I couldn't think of a more
Perfect place to be.
The place I never wanted to come to
Is the place I now never want to leave.
