Educate yourself! You can't count on others, they have their own slant or agenda. You can't just wait for that lightening bolt of God to hit you, it may never come. What can you do? Read a book, talk to others and get their insights, sit and ponder what you know and what you don't know.
Seriously, so many people simply follow the faith of their parents, often without questioning the why's and how's. They go to church or synagogue or mosque and let whoever is speaking tell them right from wrong. How bizarre it is that mankind takes the one thing that affects them forever (the afterlife) and let's it fall to what's been handed to them. Silly humans.
In discussions with people of different faiths I am flabbergasted how little they know about their particular beliefs! Rarely do they have a grasp on the history, why certain beliefs came to pass and such. Yet, they are banking on what little they know to carry them on after death.
You can't find every answer by reading a book but you can shape your outlook drastically with some education. Religion is something one experiences, true but so is everything else, the difference is that with education under your belt you can make decisions based on understanding a greater picture. Relying on others is like handing a stranger the keys to your house, that stranger could be a killer or your new best friend but if you know and learn something about this person they no longer are a stranger. Remember, people, even those with the best intentions (isn't Hell paved with those?), have their own prejudices and agendas. Learn what you can about any faith, you'll be surprised at what you might intelligently decide to believe.
