Believing in God and seeing His handiwork in everything good and meaningful is the first step in having him always at your side. When you need a friend to share your innermost thoughts wish, to ask for help, to have an eveready companion, he is there. You will never be lonely again with Him forever with you.
First of all, you must believe and make him a part of all you do. This does not mean that you go around babbling to yourself and to others all day long about him. It does mean, however, that you ask him quietly to help your friends in need, or ask Him to show you how to help them; that you think of him in good times, in bad times, and even apologize to him when you have been so busy with the things of the world, that you left him out. Instead you consult with Him regularly and ask Him what He thinks you should do about what ever it is that's bothering you.
Meditating on his goodness and his wonderful ways and never forgetting how his Son died to save you. Even if you are not a Christian in belief, you make God your friend. I like the notion that whatever good or bad that happens to me, He will see that I am able to bear it. Remember he died for you, surely you can live for him. With him always near you will never be afraid or lonely.
What is necessary in creating this personal relationship with him is getting to know Him. Don't see him as someone far off and untouchable, but as close as your best friend, the thoughts you think, the food you eat, everything. Share with him, and make Him glad. Then you will be surprised at how freeing this is. You will be surprised how much better everyone else looks to you when you see them through His eyes. Looking at them in this way you will be less judgmental and will see them as people with problems and difficulities as you yourself are.
As an example, all of the above is as easy as going outside opening your arms wide and symbolically embracing him as you breath in the air that you need to love him and to make your personal friend. Saying, to make sure He knows you mean it, 'I love you this much'. Truly, when you love him, you will let him know it every chance you get.
When my son was little, 7 or 8, for Christmas one year, he gave me a stuffed Friendly Ghost. (That lovable creature that loved everybody but in doing in, frightened many. At the time I was having a hard time and that gift meant so much to me. It came by way of my son, but I knew it was my from 'my best Friend'. For the rest of my life I have remebered that gift that came to me at a time when I needed it the most. That's what's having Him as a personal relationship does for you. It allows you to see Him in the actions of others. That makes it easier to be kind and non-judgmental in return.
