Why, in a society where everything is becoming easier to access and more quickly at that, would kids even understand what a real "challenge" was? So coddled and privileged are todays youths, so pampered and praised, even for the smallest "accomplishment", there is no real hope for this youthful generation to stand up to any challenges that they may face, let alone overcome them.
Do we force children to face realities today? Do we offer legitimate threats to keep them in line? Do we clamp down on their "freedoms" and set a strong example as adults? Clearly I wouldn't have asked any of these questions if I expected a yes from the general public...at least an honest, unbiased yes, (which is another problem that simply adds to the futile puberty of our youth).
Blame Harry Potter. He's entertaining, sure, but there are no blatant life lessons, there is nothing concrete about what he's offering us. I will admit I have not read or seen any of these installments, however, if Mr. Potter dies, I will. Then, at least, there would be something to talk to kids about. Blame our growing sensitivity as a culture. Many school teachers spend 75% of their class-time disciplining kids (sending them to the office where they will simply be sent home or suspended, which they would probably prefer anyway) as opposed to teaching the ones who do wish to learn. Blame it on the parents and the lack of social morals. Questioning our President, questioning our leaders, as if we have better knowledge or better understanding. Let the kids stand up to authority, challenge it because they feel their "rights" have been "compromised". Blame it on all of us, however, blame it on the kids, now, so maybe they find some time to think about it before they are faced with life, culture, world altering decisions that they have no place making.
Kids, the youth, don't know what a proper society is and therefore will not know how to contribute to a proper society in the future. All of their challenges, that the rest of us care about, will be faced in a social realm, and will manhandle them unless they are prepared, by us, now.
