In Buddhism, a more accurate term for reincarnation is actually 're-birth'. Re-birth is determined by the Buddhist belief of Karma - a literal translation of 'action'.

According to Buddhist faith, re-birth is an endless cycle of an endless number of lives with no beginning or an end. Some re-births can lead an individual into a pleasant, as well as a non-pleasant life; one can reutrn as a human, a lowly animal, a frustrated ghosh, or even a god. The determining factor of what one re-births as is determined by 'the law of karma' whereby a person's re-birth is based on the nature and quality of their actions.

Regardless of whether a re-birth results in a good or bad one, an individual's goal is to break free of this endless cycle, first by avoiding its unpleasant realms, and ultimately transcending it althogether in the achievement of Nirvana.

As a process, it is an individual's actions, with emphasis on ethical actions, that define their level on the cycle of re-birth, which in turn, if they are able to completely reach the transcendental level, follows in Nirvana
