Myths & legends of Cornwall and beyond

Cornwall is one of the most mysterious and fascinating places in the world. Its history is rich in folklore and legends. Some are well know, and some are a bit more cryptic.

One of the more known folklore of Cornwall is that of Giants. The great Giant Bolster was known to be a bad tempered and violent brute. He terrorized the countryside and instilled fear in local townsfolk. He fell in love with the beautiful, innocent St. Agnes. To prove his love for her, she told him to go to the cliff at Chapel Porth and fill the hole with his blood. St. Agnes knew that the hole was bottomless and Bolster went to do it anyway. He plunged a knife into his arm and waited for the hole to fill up. But the hole never did fill up and Bolster lost too much blood and he died.

The legend of the Lost Land of Lyonesse tells that the great country of Lyonesse was beyond Land's End. It is said that in the 11th century, a storm blew over the country, submerging it into the sea. It is said that the mountain peaks that had survived became known as the Isles of Sicily.

Probably the most know legend of Cornwall is that of King Arthur. The young Arthur was separated from his royal family and raised by a magical wizard known as Merlin. One day in London, Arthur had pulled out the sword in the stone, without knowing its significance. After leading his kingdom through an era of great prosperity, he met his downfall during a great battle, where he was severely injured. After, he was sent on a boat to the paradise that is known as Avalon.
