Christian reflections: Honoring marriage

Becoming One

Uniting two spirits into something lovely is the work of God defined! Creating beauty, a vibrant symphony, from an assortment of contrast, ultimately producing oneness, is the miracle of grace, divinely dispersed into the hearts of fragile souls. It is this same grace that is the glue that can unite two souls, binding each with joy in the real and active love of Christ, relishing in a love that never dies.

It is far more than a hope; it is the treasure that awaits our choice. Being rooted in union with His love, a love that knows no boundaries is the love that liberates, it is the truth that sets ones soul free. It is the love that provides the fertile ground essential to producing a new life. Isn't it a new life that we all seek in marriage; a new life lived in love, nourished by faith, exceedingly more wonderful than our greatest expectation?

Knowing the fullness of His love, we find ourselves acknowledging something much stronger than our feelings, a river of life flowing deep within our own hearts, a love that is eternal, an undeserved gift from the hand of God. In giving our love and ourselves to the other, we become Christ like and invite the blessing of God into our lives individually while reaping the immeasurable mystery of a love that can not be confined to reward or feeling.

Jesus said that in reality we lose our life by attempting to secure it, we gain real life by freely giving up our personal need of self preservation. By protecting myself, the way I am, the thing called me, I endorse the imposter of the real thing -a lasting love, a wonderfully abundant life. It is today and everyday the exalted self needs to die so that we may taste real love and truly live.

Within us there is no strength, no personal power to offer the sacrificial love that is exemplified in 1st Corinthians 13; the Christ like love we know is His goal for us. Undoubtedly, it is grace and grace alone that directs us to embrace this weakness and in faith trust that God empowers us to love with His love, knowing fully well that He has promised to become our strength in the midst of our weakness.

As a Christian, my desire is to love unconditionally, pursuit a more perfect love, a love as Christ has loved me, accepting always, being kind, forgiving and compassionate; as love focuses my desire on another. Knowing that fear is the breeding ground of doubt, it is this more perfect love that promises the eradication of all fear as we embrace by faith the gift of each other. Inviting another, saying I want you, desire you, to step forward with me, as my one lover, is an act of faith.

Choosing by faith this love that pleases the heart of God moves us one step closer today to choosing life within His Kingdom, knowing that we will forever find ourselves at home. When all else is passed away, this love will remain, as will his love for us.
