Despite the hype going into the launch of the iPhone, I do believe that it will revolutionize mobile computing. The iPhone is a perfect example of "convergence", which at one time, was assumed to take place in the home. Your TV was going to be your home theater, your PC, your stereo, your game system, and capable of cooking a London Broil to a nice medium rare if you had the right accessories.

Well, ok, maybe not that last part. But, if you lived through the hype of the push for convergence, you know exactly where I'm coming from. Convergence DID happen, actually, just not in the home. It happened on that pod you've got surgically grafted to your hip.

Two or three years ago, I had a cell phone, I had a laptop, a cd player, and I had an mp3 player. Today, I have a T Mobile Dash. I can check my email, surf the web, I can sync it up with my music folder, and I can even use it as a modem to connect my laptop if I'm in the middle of nowhere. Life is acceptable.

I say acceptable, because all phones-even Smartphones such as the Dash-don't actually give you the real internet. It gives you a one column, mainly text type internet. Navigation through web pages using the keys on a cellphone is murder, I dont care if you're an emaciated midget with piano fingers. The iPhone, however, is using a real browser, and you will see the real web.

The other really nice thing I notice about the iPhone is how things are actually intertwined. You can search for a business, for example, find the business, touch the phone number listing on the map, and you're calling them. minimal clicks, minimal effort, maximum use of the technology.

Of course, the part everyone is drooling about is it's iPod functionality. With the ability to sync to iTunes, and it's range of content, you're going to be hrd pressed to find a phone that will offer the same amount of functionality for a lesser price. At least, until they eventually drop the price, or open it up to other carriers. Im going to hang with my Dash for the remainder of my contract, and then I will be getting an iPhone. Absolutely.
