Just when we thought all things were normal, now men are wearing makeup. People in the public eye - actors, newspersons, orators etc. have always worn makeup since they are usually under harsh lights and they want to look their best. But let's get real. Make up for men gives flashbacks of Gene Simmons in Kiss. Do men really need make up?
Apparently more men are taking their personal grooming seriously by thinking of more than just shaving and tooth brushing. With the introduction of the Montreal based KenMen in 2004, products such as concealers, skin bronzers and tanners have become more common. Men are concerned about their appearance in the workplace as well as in the dating scene. Men do not want to look sloppy and are focusing on their facial features, coloring, hair cut and color and clothing. Men want products, however that are subtle. They do not want to advertise the fact they are wearing makeup, tweezing their eyebrows or bronzing their skin. They want to look good without having a neon sign flashing around their necks indicating "make up on board."
Women (speaking for myself as well) appreciate a well groomed man. His nails, hair and skin should all look clean and well cared for. Women are use to having manicures, pedicures, hair color, makeovers and other aesthetic applications and they come to expect it from one another. The one thing to remember is that the whole intention of applying make up is to enhance what nature already gave you. Hiding the flaws and imperfections are just a small part of it. How many times have you seen a man with a blemish that you just want to loan him your concealer to dab on?
Another part of make up for men is the education that goes along with its use. Remember ladies, it took us years of trial and error or the helpful hints of family and friends in learning how to use makeup. A small amount of make up with the right guidance can go a long way.
Many men (and women) I am sure will be opposed to manly make up. After all men are supposed to be rough, rugged and macho; not pretty and flawless. Our society is allowing our youngsters to forget what it is like to be physical individuals and instead draws them into idleness by too much television, video games and computer time. Too much fantasy and not enough reality. Men are supposed to find beauty in the opposite sex and nature, not in the mirror. So while manly makeup is becoming the new boon in the fashion industry, it still shrieks of oddness and sends more flashbacks of Kiss concerts in the 70's-80's.
