The weight gained during pregnancy is essential not only to the well-being of the child, but to the mother as well. The extra fat stores, approximately 7-8 pounds, that are gained as part of pregnancy weight are there to nourish and protect the baby in the womb and then provide energy to produce milk for breastfeeding after the baby is born. Our bodies have been programmed to operate this way since the dawn of time, the increased fat stores protecting us from starvation and ensuring the survival of the baby. Ideally, if you have gained the recommended 25-35 pounds during pregnancy, you should be able to lose it - IDEALLY.
Unfortunately, caring for a new baby is not a walk in the park. While highly rewarding, it is also a stressful time, full of angst and devoid of sleep. Many studies have indicated that both stress and lack of sleep contribute to weight gain. Stress increases the level of the hormone cortisol, which has been linked to weight gain. Combine this with a lack of energy and no time to exercise, weight gain is almost inevitable.
Lack of energy and a complete upheaval of your life makes it difficult to maintain healthy habits. Many moms find themselves skipping regular exercise and reaching for high-fat, high-calorie convenience and comfort foods. So not only does the baby weight not come off, there is postpartum weight gain as well.
Sound hopeless? Don't despair. Do yourself and your baby a favor and establish a routine. Routines make it easier for you and your baby to establish good habits. Routines will offer a sense of comfort to your baby and some predictability to your day. Make exercise a regular, scheduled part of your day. If you can't get to the gym, take your baby for a walk - every little bit helps. Stock your home with convenient, healthy foods such as washed and ready fruits and vegetables. Your little bundle will soon be joining you at the dinner table, so set a good example and you'll both lead healthy and happy lives.
