I don't think the military pays it soldiers well at all.
Here's a suggestion, do a study of which military positions have the highest life expectancy. You probably wouldn't even have to do a study as the insurance companies probably already have this info.
So starting with people in the front lines, give them 5-10 times what they now get paid since they are the likeliest to die.
Come on, if you're going to ask a man or woman to die for their country, make it worth their while.
Maybe with a less lethal position like a pencil pusher in Washington, give them only 20% more of what they currently earn.
I think if we graduate pay according to risk, we'd see a lot less people enlisting.
Don't tell me this isn't possible if we can pay mercenaries a lot more than the average soldier makes.
