As things stand, it is impossible for a poor man or woman to become President of the USA. Millions of dollars are pumped into election campaigns to get the candidates on our airwaves, into the newspapers, on TV and in the streets. Coming election time, you cannot escape. But to rise to the top of the pile, you need to invest an awful lot of your own money. So what chance the small man? None.
I believe the Government should fund election campaigns. But at the same time it should bring in even more stringent rules as to what can and cannot be done. There should also be a cap on how much public money can be spent. And no private money should be allowed. Everyone should be able to compete on a level playing field.
The citizens of the USA want the best possible person to win the Presidential election - not the richest, not the slickest in front of the cameras. Would George Bush ever have got into the White House if he had been strictly subjected to the same campaign spend as his opponents? I think not.
Politicians should be made to prove their worth, to work their way to the top, not just buy positions of power.
