I openly admit that my viewpoints toward the military and its actions lean towards the liberal side of the political spectrum. I also freely admit that there is a need to maintain a military, even when I do not agree with the way our government chooses to use them. Honest disclosure dictates I make those statement before now saying that neither of them has as significant effect on my opinion about children from military families receiving discounts on college tuition.
Some may argue that the living wage salary paid to military personnel or the GI Bill tuition funding the soldiers receive for their own education is enough recompense. In no way can any monetary payout compensate for the sacrifice a child must pay when they share a parent with a military body. There is no way to make good on the time lost with a parent deployed or the stressors of knowing the beloved parent may not return.
A college tuition discount does not make up for the costs paid by the entirety of a military family. It does however make a solid college education a real possibility for many children. In that education they can find their place in the world and, hopefully, gain a higher understanding what the sacrifices made by their parents and themselves were truly for.
As a nation we do not give the children of soldiers much of a say in what their childhood will be like. They must move where the government says they will live. They may only see the serving parent when our government says the adult is not needed elsewhere. They least we can do for these children is give them a better chance at obtaining a college education by provide a discount on tuition. While the contribution made by civilian citizens is taxpayer money, the gift given to the children is a chance at an education to help them understand the choices their parents made and the choices they will face as adults.
