Rap music is just like any other music out there today. It tells a story about the rap artist's world. For some strange reason, rap music has been criticized about whether it is considered music or not for years. There is no difference between a rap artist and a country artist, R&B artist, Pop artist and any other artist for that matter. Music is a song about a world seen by a particular person. Yes, rap music tends to deem offensive to some people and many rap artists tend to use explicit language and degrade women and whatnot, but the simple fact remains that all music is just a story and rap music falls within those borders.
Rap artists may have a different way of expressing themselves, but their music is music nonetheless. If you look at today's music world, there are many songs in many musical genre groups that make absolutely no sense at all but we consider them music and the rap industry should be treated no differently. In fact, rap music has developed greatly since its creation back in the 80's and it is accepted by many as acceptable music.
In reality though, rap is considered music if it's listener considers it music. In my personal opinion, the listener has the choice of whether or not he/she considers rap music to really be music. On the personal level, the decision is left to the listener but the public decision is a mass decision and as the public stands right now, rap music is genuine music. The debate concerning whether or not rap music is actually music is sort of ridiculous to me. If rock and heavy metal can be considered music, then rap is music as well. If techno and dance are considered music, then rap is music too. All the artists that make up all these musical genres are trying to do the same exact thing: to entertain the masses with their music. Instead of trying to decipher whether rap is music or not all the time, take a second and truly listen to the rap lyrics you are hearing. Enter the world the rap artist is trying to describe and you will begin to truly understand why rap is considered music; it takes you to a different world, a world you had never seen....until now.
