Essential 'Fantasy' reading list

I am a long devoted reader and a lover of fantasy novels and books. I discovered my love of fantasy in the immortals quartet of Tamora Pierce. The first book, Wild Magic, is a great read. It is about a young girl who loses her family and soon, with the help of a powerful mage and a horse mistress, discovers her very own kind of magic. This book is a must read, as is all of that series.

After discovering my love of fantasy literature, I found myself looking for different types of fantasy. Through this, I discovered Poison study by Maria Snyder. this book is filled with magic but includes characters and places so real that I felt that I was truly with Yelena, the main character, when she was tasting the food for poisons, and when she was discovering her magic. Maria Snyder writes with such conviction and detail that it's hard to believe that the book was, in fact, fiction.

Of course, once in a while, everyone needs a good laugh. I found laughter, comedy, love, and 'everything but the kitchen sink' in Once upon a marigold. I read this book over and over and found that it never gets old! It is a classic 'happily ever after story' but is filled with fun and bubbly characters that you'll never forget.

Finally, in my trip through the great fantasy books of today, I give you a series that is set in the future. The uglies trilogy by Scott Westerfield illustrates a world where anyone normal is considered ugly. The three books in this trilogy give something that will leave you reading late into the night and begging for more.
