The government has no right to dictate who people lay beside when they go to bed at night. However the real issue concerns the term marriage. The federal and state governments should only be allowed to issue civil unions. Why? Because civil unions are statements that individuals live together and support each other and want to be able to share eachothers benefits. Marriage is a religious term and therefore should not be included in any government issued document. Anyone should be allowed to get a civil union with who ever they want as long as it doesn't violate any current laws that ban polygamy, incest, etc.
All homosexuals want is the same rights and benefits as people who are currently married. All that married people want is to have the term marriage remain a religious term that is defined between a man and a women. By eliminating marriage licenses and only issuing civil unions to everyone, the term marriage is issued by churches because you get married in a church. The removal of the term marriage from the government allows for the debate to be shifted to where it belongs in a church. After all its a issue of faith and belief because in the eyes of the government all people are created equal an should be treated that way.
Currently under today's laws if you live together with someone you can't visit them in the hospital unless you are related to them or married to them. Also if you live with someone your whole life just as friends and they die you are entitled to none of their death benefits, such as life insurance or social security. These benefits should be extended to the significant other, best friend, or wife of the individual who died. The government should not limit the benefits only to the wife or husband of the dead individual.
The issue of homosexuality is a matter for the church to decide and the government should stay out of the matter. Benefits should be extended to all homosexuals because in the eyes of the law everyone is equal.
