America is founded on the notion that hard work will ensure you and your descendants will reap the economic benefits from our nation's prosperity. It is axiomatic that our nation must both survive and prosper. Military service is fundamental to America's survival; education is necessary for its prosperity. Without the two, our borders will fall and our economy will stagnate.
The success of one's children is a powerful motivating factor. People cross treacherous seas, arid deserts, and are willing to sacrifice everything for the opportunity to bring their children to America. Once here, the journey to success only begins. Self sacrifice is the mantra of America's immigrants. They toil day and night, scrimp, save, and most only have the dream that one day their children will attend college. This is the type of sacrifice America should reward.
Because America does not currently impose compulsory military service, we rely on economic incentives to encourage our citizens to bear arms in our defense. However, a patriot for hire is no better than a foreign mercenary. Risk alone does not merit reward, sacrifice does. As we honor our nation, our nation should honor those who sacrifice themselves for it.
America's military does not offer many economic opportunities. It provides a basic standard of living, but little chance of advancing oneself. Those who serve our nation and sacrifice its economic benefits should, at the very least, know their children will fare better. Tuition assistance is one way to ease the burden of such sacrifice.
