At least once a week, I witness someone riding a motorcycle without a helmet. Now, a rider truly takes his or her own life in their hands every time they strap a leg over their bike, not having the kind of protection offered by being enclosed in a car or other vehicle with a cab. Having some motorcycle riding experience, I know that regardless of helmet use or not, if you spill your bike or meet with any other large solid object, you will get hurt. It may only be bumps or bruises. But, it might be worst. I was fortunate enough to walk away from the two accidents I had with a motorcycle, but I was sore all over my body for a week afterward.
I am also aware of one of the lasting debates over helmets - that some riders feel a helmet actually restricts their field of vision. I can't argue this point. What I can say is when shopping for a helmet, use common sense and get fitted with one that fits snug and doesn't restrict your vision.
Finally, not only do I witness single riders without helmets, I often witness riders who aren't wearing a helmet, but have a passenger who is wearing one. This is protection for the passenger, but what if something strikes the one controlling the bike in the head, like a bug or a rock at 60 mph? This is like shooting down a set of rapids in a watercraft with your Oarsman being the only one who doesn't have safety gear on. Something happens to one controlling boat and where does that leave you?
Motorcycling is a dangerous hobby, but with a little common sense for safety and awareness of your surroundings, it can still be fully enjoyed, even wearing a helmet.
