Being a good soccer parent is as important as being member of the coaching or soccer team. As a parent you have an important role to play. There are a lot of things you will find rewarding about soccer and being a soccer parent. You will meet other soccer parents. You will see your child grow, develop skills, and become a team player. Hopefully you will help your child become a team player.
Pay your fee and expenses
Any soccer team has fees to pay. There is registration fees, tournaments fees, equipment costs and many other costs associated with soccer. Thankfully the soccer expenses are not as expensive as say hockey. As your child grows and continues in the sport, you will also update the uniform required. Many coaching teams consult with the players and the parents about the style of the uniforms and other accessories.
Support your child
This is readily apparent, but considers that your perspective and your child's perspective are not one and the same. You two may have different opinions on many different things, so keep that in your consideration. Also stand for your child's best interest. That comes naturally enough, but keeps in mind there are many interests on the table. Since many of the coaching team are also parents of a player that can make for an interesting mix. If your child is getting short changed because of the coach-parents focus on his her child, don't be shy to speak up. Try not making it a chronic on going issue, but bring it up once in a while as the opportunity arises. Be diplomatic at all times.
Support the whole team
That again is readily apparent. Support the coaching team, the players, and parents. If the team does fund raising activities, join in at least one of the activities. Share driving duties. Be there for the games. Be a fan of more than your child. Offer to help the coach carry the balls and water to the team bench once in a while.
Support the coaches
Coaching can be very big responsibility. There are injury issues they have to deal with, the overall state of team spirit, games, tournaments, fund raising, fees, and communication with the players and parents.
The coaching staff also has a very tough job of developing the player's skills, teaching, and molding the spirit of the team. The spirit of the team is the greatest common asset to all involved. Friendships will develop that will last for many years. Players will also have trouble or discomfort with other players or members of the coaching team.
