Many women have and keep only "guy friends" with their reasoning being that women are too catty. The majority of the time the women making those statements are actually speaking of themselves and they prefer to keep their competition to a minimum. I would know, I used to be one of those women.
How sad that I missed out on some of the greatest relationships I could imagine - someone who could love and accept me without regard to my weight, income or hair color. A female friend is one of greatest assets a woman can have - someone to bounce things off of, walk through dark periods, celebrate the best of times. There are more benefits to same gender friendship then can be listed here in this format.
Typically, if you are caught in a oneupmanship with a close friend, it's because something in either of you or both of you has believed the lie, "If I can get this before so and so, that makes me a better person". This robs the friendship of the ability to be transparent and intimate.
