A movie that defies genre, I suppose we could say that Lucky Number Slevin is one of the quirkiest and most enjoyable thriller/crime story/drama/comedy/action films to come along in quite some time. At its helm is the unusual protagonist, Slevin, played exquisitely by Josh Hartnett, who is able to evoke this guy-next-door feel to his character while at the same time rolling off witty lines and getting punched multiple times by various people.
The film's love interest is equally quirky. As Lindsey, Lucy Liu is bubbly, chatty and utterly likeable. In an interesting twist she appears to be more willing to be more of the action hero than Slevin, who just appears to be at the whim of fortune and some very powerful people, played by movie royalty Morgan Freeman, Bruce Willis and Sir Ben Kingsley.
Filmed in a way that evokes Pulp Fiction and Lock Stock and Two Smoking Barrels, the general atmosphere of the film is hip and contemporary. Director Paul McGuigan manages to evoke a lot of great films in his telling while at the same time allowing this film to be wholly and utterly original. The writing and the performances are fresh and completely likeable, even when the action is at its most gruesome. The film is clever and entertaining at its best.
