shaitan is the arabic name for the satan or devil. the other name for the devil in arabic is Iblis. satan as so called is the creation that based on free will decided to disobey his creator. this was on the basis that its creation was from fire hence proclaiming its superiority over all creation.
this was seen at the time when Adam was made and Allah had ordered all angels to bow to the human. however, Satan refused to do so on the basis of the inferiority of the human form.
Satan was the most knowledgeable of all creation. one may ask the question, that is the attainment of knowledge, the key to find god? the answer is no, because the satan is more knowledgeable than humans, and yet he is the cursed one from god. the difference lies in the belief of the heart and the soul. humans believe in god with fear and love, whereas Satan does not fear anyone, and is ready to challenge god, his own creator.
this can all be seen in the second chapter of the holy Quran, surah Baqra.
