movies have been disappointing this year, so it makes me a little worried. My prediction: B
Saw 4 (TRD: October 26)- Again with the jigsaw killer and the held captive and the blood. Oh yes, there will be blood. Tons of stupid, overly-gory, unrealistic blood. I am so excited. Oh, that's right, it's hard to convey sarcasm in text, so I'll be quite literal: NONE OF THESE DAMN MOVIES HAS BEEN GOOD AND I'M SURE THIS ONE WILL SUCK AS BAD IF NOT WORSE THAN ALL THE OTHERS!
My prediction: F
I Am Legend (TRD: December 14) Will Smith is playing Robert Neville, and it takes place in New York, oh, and it's an action film. This is of course in contrast to the book where Robert Neville was a shy, quiet man, who lived in Los Angeles, and didn't use guns (except for once.) I Am Legend is easily one of the greatest horror books of all time. It created the genre of the zombie/vampire plague and the soul survivors fighting back. It was the father of most modern horror. Unfortunately, it is going to be mangled in an action-oriented adaptation that will suck all the reality and dark humanity out of the text. It was already made into the campy-yet-wonderful Omega Man, why do it again? But I loved the book so much I'll be first in line when the movie opens. It's too bad I'm so sure it won't be good.
My prediction: C-
Rogue (TRD: October) - Michael Vartan plays an American journalist traveling in Australia on a river tour until the boat gets attacked by a giant crocodile. Wasn't that the plot of Lake Placid and Primeval? Oh, and weren't all those giant-animal horror movies based on Jaws and King Kong? This is going to suck, all the way around, but not as bad as Saw 4. It won't be actively bad, just totally uninteresting.
My prediction: D+
Severance (TRD: Unknown, 2007) This is a European movie, about a group of salesmen who are rewarded with a group picnic in the mountains. During their "team-building" exercises, they become the unwitting prey of murderous psychopaths. The movie blends horror and comedy into an unsettling yet funny feature that will stick with you for quite some time. It was released in Ireland in 2006, and has won numerous awards and has been critically acclaimed since its release. I think it will play well in the US market.
My prediction: B+
