Captivity (Tentative Release Date (TRD): July 13) - Starring Elisha Cuthbert as the supermodel Jennifer Tree, who is adored by fans the world over. One night, while at a charity event, she is drugged, and kidnapped. She awakes to find herself in a cellar, and then the real horror begins. This film has already found itself in a maelstrom of controversy after numerous attempts to get it's rating lowered by the MPAA failed, and the production company was forced to take down posters that some people believed were to graphic or demeaning. However, it seems like another HOSTEL-meets-SAW rip-off and I wouldn't give it much hope. Even the sexy Elisha Cuthbert's pure hotness couldn't save something genuinely contrived.
My prediction: C+
30 Days Of Night (TRD: October 19)- Starring Josh Hartnet as Eben Oulmaun, the Sheriff of a small Alaskan town that is experiencing 30 full days without the sun, not an uncommon occurrence in Alaska. However, on this particular month of darkness, a terrible force has descended on the small town, and it's up to the town folk to not become meals. I like Josh Harnett, I like Comic Book Movies, I liked 30 Days of Night, and I don't think this will let any of us down. (For a look at the trailer, go to www.ign.com and look for 30 Days of Night.)
My prediction: A
1408 (TRD: June 22)- This Stephen King-based horror movie, starring John Cusack and Samuel L. Jackson, looks to be the only one of it's kind: Good. After decades of weak adaptations (ok, ok, excluding Carrie) someone was finally able to capture the creepiness of a King novel, but cut out all the random and gratuitous crap you usually find in his over-written books. It's about Cusack who spends his time debunking supposed hauntings. He comes to the legendary Dolphin Hotel in investigate the supposed haunting of room 1408. This movie has one of the most unnerving trailers of any horror film since The Shinning. I think it's a good shot at being a scary movie. However, the very fact that it's a King adaptation, knocks it down a peg automatically.
My prediction: B+
Resident Evil: Extinction (TRD: September 21)- Mila Jovovich returns as Alice, the sexiest Zombie Killer since well ever, I guess. This time, she is fighting the undead plague in an entropy-devastated Las Vegas, where sand has reclaimed the land. The production value seems pretty damn high and, while RE:2 was more of an action movie than a horror film, the whole thing was pretty entertaining. However, almost all other trilogy-ending
