The idea that steroids in sports create an uneven playing field is absolutely absurd.
First, steroids are readily available to any athlete. If they were made legal and prescribed by the team doctor, they would be even more available and safer.
Second, doesn't everything create an uneven playing field? If we wanted all of the athletes on the field to be equal, shouldn't we make Tom Brady sit out the game that the Patriots will play against the Titans because he's a better quarterback than Vince Young and we don't want the Patriots to have an unfair advantage?
Is it fair for a player that chooses to go out with his friends instead of studying the play book to demand that all of his opponents not study their play books?
Is it fair for a player that chooses to attend church instead of practice to demand that all of his opponents skip practice?
If you choose not to use steroids when others are, that is your choice but as with any choice there may be consequences.
Third, taking steroids does not automatically make you a better athlete. You still have to work out, you still have to train, you still have to practice, and you still have to study your play book/game tapes. If taking steroids automatically made you a better athelete instantly, we'd all be taking them and making $2.3 million in the NFL instead of sitting here at our computers talking about steroids.
Steroids are simply an additional way for an athlete to prepare to compete at the highest level.
