OK, so Paris Hilton got sentenced to some jail time for breaking her probation. She was in jail for a couple of days, went home to her mansion and then got sent back to jail. Why do we care? Are our lives that boring and uneventful that we live vicariously through the lives of famous spoiled brats? Perhaps it's because we think that celebrities have it made. They are rich and famous and they get everything they want. They hang out with other famous people and go to big fancy parties. We watch them in their real lives as if it were a TV show. It's all very entertaining. The E channel interrupted a movie with breaking news concerning Paris's release from jail. Is this breaking news? Breaking news used to be that a famous person died or there was a national tragedy.
Why is Paris famous? She is the heir to a family fortune, she has a reality show that mimics her real life antics and she is very easy to make fun of.
Her fans feel that it's not fair that she is in jail in the first place. Let's look at the facts. She was on probation for drinking and driving and then broke her probation for doing the same thing. There are over 17,000 fatalities contributed to drunk driving in the United States each year. She got lucky, she didn't kill anyone. How would we feel if it were a neighbor that had the same situation? What if Paris Hilton weren't famous? Would you care, of course not? There were throngs of reporters and helicopters surrounding Paris' house once she was released for her unknown "medical condition".
I am not proposing that Paris is a bad person. She is a product of her environment. Her parents, her business manager, her fans made her who she is. She is a circus clown that is performing for us. We laugh at her antics and she responds to our laughter by doing more stupid things that make us laugh. Let her drink, say stupid things, dress in outrageous and skimpy clothing, and flirt with the goofy guys on her reality show. When she breaks the law, she should be treated like any other slob on the street. Just a reminder, it's not news, it's entertainment.
