Being from Qubec (a French-speaking province in eastern Canada), French has always been particularly important to me. In this region, it represents not only a means of communication, but a sense of history, understanding, and national pride. It allows diversity to exist, and it gives an alternative European culture to the typically North American feel of anglophonic Canada.
The French language is studied universally. It holds with it a beautiful culture; a "joie de vivre" (joy of living) and a certain artistic means of expressing oneself. From Moliere and Voltaire to Camus and Sartre, French has always been a great language of philosophy and art. Expression and logic are very present in French, and it, therefore, can help you to express what cannot be expressed in other languages.
Grammatically speaking, it follows relatively strict rules, making you more meticulously focused than in other languages. The vocabulary is also closely related to English, and it is a great way to improve your English.
French serves as a good transitional language into other Romantic languages, as well as some Germanic languages.
Perhaps most importantly, French has a certain chic factor with which you can impress your friends by talking about your latest "coup de coeur" and your "vis vis" insight into the latest political issue.
So as a good Quebcois should say: Vive le francais!
