Understanding 'EMO' and its musical appeal

by Mizu

Well first off I'd like to state Emo does not mean Emotional.

it stands for Emotive Hardcore Punk, a movement in London in the late 1980's.

Secondly I'd like to state that i dress emo/scene or whatever you wish to call it, but only sometimes listen to the music. I listen to rap, hip hop, pop, and Japanese music as well.

I believe the emotional appeal of Emo music is it allows people to connect. Connect to a broken heart, a shattered dream, a friendship that ended. It allows people to know that Yeah, other people are going through the same thing, they are not alone in their feelings.
Another thing is is is an outlet. A way to let go of your feelings. To scream along, to sing along. It's a way to repel the angst maybe, just feel numb for a bit. I suppose it is also a way to justify the way one feels, as you can see other people reacted the same way.

I believe it is merely and outlet, piece of entertainment, and has emotional appeal, as do other styles of music.
