The one scientific discovery I would love to make would be to find a clean, efficient, renewable energy source. Our world is traveling down a dead end path littered with destruction along the way. Besides the fact that one day our natural resources will be used up, the side effects from these resources are destroying the environment as well.
Currently this world is highly dependent on oil. Much of the oil industry is controlled by a few wealthy barons who take in tremendous profits while their countries go to ruin. Hopefully the discovery of a renewable energy source would end the monopoly of these tyrants and place the great responsibility of powering the world into the hands of more people, with a more democratic mindset.
At times paying exorbitant prices at the gas pump will outrage the citizens of America and raise a rallying cry for better options, but we are yet to see results. Corn-based fuels are gaining in popularity, but they are lacking in efficiency (a gallon of ethanol provides approximately 34% less energy than a gallon of gasoline) and are draining the land as well. Although a plant based fuel may be the best solution in the end, I think it is clear that a corn-based fuel is merely a diversion on the path to real development.
A problem directly related to all fossil-fuels is pollution. It is undeniable pollution from humans has a negative effect on the environment. Along with the problem on encroaching on the health of all animals, pollution is destroying ecosystems and leading to global warming. Although some may contend that the current warming of the earth is merely part of a normal cycle, there has been much proof that changes to the world wide climate are directly related to human activity, especially carbon emissions. In the United States combustion of fossil fuels is responsible for 90% of all greenhouse gas emissions. I hope to never find out if global warming is a serious threat, and the best way to avoid this potentially catastrophic situation is through cleaner energy.
A new fuel that can power the world will bring good on so many levels. It will help economically, humanitarianly, and environmentally. I dont think there is anything else that can make this many contributions to every facet of life. Really all I want is the world to be a better place for everyone in it, and I think the best way to accomplish this goal is through a clean, efficient, renewable energy source.
