Coal bed methane discovered in Wyoming, US: Destroying the land for the sake of fuel

I'm confused. I've been reading and hearing about how fossil fuels is contributing to global warming. Then I read an article about extracting coal bed methane.

The article says, In the next few years, Wyoming is expected to be hit by one of the most disastrous floods of modern times.

But the cause of the flood has many Wyoming residents spitting mad.

You see this "flood" won't be an act of God.

It'll be man-made.

In fact, this catastrophe will be created by a government mandate- issued by the President of the United States.

This government-created flood will contain eight trillion gallons of the nastiest polluted water you could imagine.

You see Coal Bed Methane (CBM) has been discovered beneath the surface. Due to recent innovations in CBM extraction technologies and increasing cost of petroleum, this once thought of waste by-product called "gob gas" is now being aggressively sought after.

Coal bed methane extraction is a method of extraction from a coal deposit. The methane is absorbed into solid coal matrix (coal macerals) and is released when the coal seam is depressurized. To retrieve reserves of methane, wells are drilled.

The process has resulted in the drilling of tens of thousands of gas wells, and extensive support facilities, such as roads, pipelines, and compressors.

the technology being used to produce coal bed methane requires pumping large volumes of water to the surface, where it is stored in huge wastewater impoundments That now dominate the visual landscape. This practice, which is designed to evaporate and infiltrate the waste into shallow aquifer, not only removes hundreds of acres of ranch land from production but also is a blatant waste of valuable underground water reserves.

The once quiet windswept grassy landscape of pure ranch country, now find the sound of the compressors, like 747s on their take-off rolls, and polluted water that will eventually kill the roaming elk and deer.

Like I said in the beginning I'm confused. One minute we are told we have to cut our reliance on fossil fuels and the next our government is planning to sink over 75,000 wells.

With all the money used for this why can't we use it to find a better way to create renewable energy.
