Standing in front of the mirror staring at the strange person facing her, wearing the pajamas her father had given her for her birthday, Mckayla stared, something wasn't right. Granted it wasn't going to be a normal day anyway, it was her father's funeral that day, the last opportunity for Mckayla to say goodbye. Farewell to a man who held her when she cried, kept her safe, made her laugh, a man who she will never be able to speak to again, ever.
No, there was something else. Her eyes dropped down her reflection, stopping at her stomach; she was pregnant, four months pregnant, unplanned yet wanted, even if she was fourteen. Her mum, Barbara had been devastated at the news, although, still supportive, what else was there to do? After all, she knew that shouting would get her nowhere, Dave on the other hand was almost thrilled at the news, he didn't wince, cry nor ignore Mckayla, and instead he smiled and cuddled her. Dave was the kind of man who always saw the good in bad or troublesome situations; he could always prove that there really was a silver lining in every cloud and that everything happened for a reason.
But now he'd gone it was hard for Mckayla to do all that for herself, for nothing seemed right, nothing seemed to have a silver lining, no matter how hard she looked, all she had was her unborn baby, which was the only person in the world who could understand what she was going through as it was the closest thing to her, emotionally and physically.
Lost in her thoughts, Mckayla had hardly noticed Alex talking to her until she felt the baby kicking inside her, alerting her.
"Babe? You alright?" He held her head in his hands and looked deeply into her eyes, searching for a sign of recognition, it was still early, and he had come over quickly because he knew Mckayla would need him the most that day, her mother wasn't in, but he had a key.
She smiled that same smile which had made him fall for her to begin with, the previous year. His heart pounded so hard he was sure she could hear it. Staring into her eyes still, returning her smile, she took his hands in hers and placed them on her swollen stomach, he felt the baby and his eyes immediately filled with tears. He knew that she was troubled, her father had just died and she had loved him more than anyone, after all, he was a good man, he had been so good about Mckayla's pregnancy, didn't shout once, just cuddled her and told her it would be OK, he had respected her father for that.
"Yeah,
