His Daughter's Keeper
Kaitlynn's heart threatened to beat right out of her chest when Drew's arms wrapped around her and he asked if she needed a hug. The answer to that question was yes, but she wasn't at all certain that she wanted him to be the one doing the hugging. She wasn't going to lie and say, or even think, that she didn't feel the pull. She felt it alright and it was powerful and exhilarating and terrifying.
Her knees felt weak, her mouth felt dry and breathing took too much effort as she forced herself to take a step back, ending the embrace that she wished didn't have to ever end. But this was her sister's husband, her niece's father, not to mention her boss. This couldn't happen because there were just too many things against it, too many things that made it impossible to work.
The cake, she was sure, was delicious, but Kaitlynn didn't taste a single bite of the chocolaty dessert. Her ears picked up little snippets of Bailey's chattering but every time her eyes left her plate, they collided with Drew's across the table and set her heart to thumping again, causing her mind to conjure up images of things that could never be.
The second she noticed that Bailey was done with her cake, Kaitlynn jumped up from the table and picked up the three plates and forks to wash. Once she was done with that task, she turned to Bailey and tried to sound more cheerful than she felt as she announced, "It's time to get ready for bed, Miss Sullivan."
"Noooo! I don't wanna go to bed yet. I still have secrets to tell Daddy." Bailey whined.
"You can tell Daddy your secrets when he tucks you in, okay? But right now, it's time for your bath and your story." Kaitlynn took Bailey's hand and ushered her little charge out of the kitchen to her room where they picked out pink pajamas to put on after her bath. Bath time was a wet affair as usual with Kaitlynn ending up just as damp as Bailey was, and by the time it was over, Bailey was yawning and looking more than ready for sleep.
"Story time, then you can tell your secrets to Daddy." Kaitlynn perched on the edge of Bailey's bed and opened the book that Bailey had chosen. As she read, her thoughts continued to drift to Drew and her stomach twisted nervously, sending delightfully terrifying tingles throughout her body from head to toe.
Bailey fell asleep before the story was over so Kaitlynn stopped reading and watched the girl sleep. Her sweet little face looked like that of an angel in picture books
