The history and function of the cupola as an architectural detail

A cupola in its truest form of both design and accent can take on many forms. Traditionally, these dome-like building toppers and gazebo-like formations have been around for centuries. Many structures, ancient and modern, famous and otherwise were adorned with cupolas. Recently, this architecture has seeped into American culture and design; originating from Europe centuries ago.

When choosing your cupola, a wide array of styles, functions, shapes, and materials are available. This depends upon the building or structure, municipal building codes, design firms or architect and the end result and look you desire.

You are only limited by your imagination and budget when the cupola becomes an exciting part of your plans. Use your imagination and you can watch as a walkway emerges from your idea. Some even take the form of lanterns and focal points and are crafted from a variety of materials not limited to stone, wood, or even metal formations.

The choice is yours how you design your cupola and what purpose it will serve. Choosing a cupola for your next project is only going to improve the beauty and value of your structure while demonstrating your ability to keep up with current design trends.
